Introduction of Research Institute of International Chinese Language Education of Beijing Language and Culture University

The Research Institute of International Chinese Language Education is designed as a brand-new platform serving for the study of international Chinese language education. The Institute is based on the Center for Studies of Chinese as a Second Language (CSCSL)—a key research institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in the Ministry of Education of China, and Research Base of International Chinese Language Education—an institute for international promotion of Chinese Language, by Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) through reintegrating the superior resources and talents of Chinese International Education inside and outside BLCU. Generally speaking, the goal of the institute is to build itself into the most authoritative and influential institution at home and abroad in the aspect of international education of Chinese language. That being said, the institute will carry on the fine traditions of BLCU to continue innovations in theories, wisdom, ideas, strategies, standards, methods, models, textbooks, technologies and talents. It will locate the key research direction, integrate academic strength, reinforce collaboration, and work in line with national needs. In this way, it is aimed to producing more forward-looking, leading and interdisciplinary high-level achievements so as to better serve China’s national strategies and the global needs of Chinese language education.

Up to now, the Institute has set five subordinate academic institutions: Linguistic Research Center of International Chinese Language Education, Applied Research Center of International Chinese Language Education, Research Center of International Chinese Language Education and Confucius Institute Development, Information Resource Center of International Chinese Language Education and Editorial Department of “Chinese Teaching in the World”.

Attaching equal importance to the academic and think-tank research, the institute will conduct research in the following twelve key aspects: first, the ontological study of language for the International Education of Chinese Language; second, language learning and cognitive research; third, interactive linguistics and the research of teaching Chinese language; fourth, the research and development of International Education of Chinese Language; fifth, the research of the technology applied in International Education of Chinese Language; sixth, related research of Chinese teaching theories and methods; seventh, the development and evaluation of International Education of Chinese Language; eighth, the development of Confucius Institute and other major language communication institutions around the world; ninth, regional and national studies on the international promotion of Chinese language; tenth, the construction and research of database for International Education of Chinese Language; eleventh, the construction and research of corpus for International Education of Chinese Language; and twelfth, the integration and service of the information and resource for International Education of Chinese Language.

Meanwhile, the Institute has made up its goals in these nine aspects: first, to set up a high-level research team; second, to cultivate leading talents in this discipline; third, to undertake important scientific research projects; fourth, to train high-quality graduate students; fifth, to promote international academic exchanges and cooperation; sixth, to bring academic research into application and yield remarkable achievements; seventh, to enhance the Institute’s academic influence at home and abroad; eighth, to integrate information resources for the development of discipline and career; ninth, to provide more social services.

To this end, the Institute will launch its team-building initiative, to employ, in different ways, both internationally and domestically eminent experts and outstanding young and middle-aged scholars who will be welcomed as consultative members. The foundation of the institute will have a crucial implication both on the discipline construction of the International Education of Chinese Language and on the international promotion of Chinese language.
